Medal and case, Sydney International Exhibition 1879, gold / leatherette / satin / velvet, medal designed by J. S. & A. B. Wyon, struck at Sydney Branch Mint, Sydney, New South Wales, Australia, 1879
Gold medal engraved on both sides. On the obverse is an image of a female figure clothed in a toga and with a wreath in her raised right hand. In her left hand she is holding a shield. At her feet are objects symbolic of work, wealth, education and culture. In the background is the 1879 Garden Palace. Above the head of the figure are the words 'ORTA RECENS QUAM PURA NITES'. Around the rim are the words 'INTERNATIONAL EXHIBITION SYDNEY N.S.W. M.D. CCC. LXXIX'. On the reverse is stamped a wreath of Australian native flowers. The case has a blue leatherette exterior with orange satin and blue velvet interior.
